Intensive Care Unit Leavers

Creative Health Courses for Intensive Care Unit Leavers

Working closely with Gloucestershire’s award winning ICU team, and as part of NHS Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group’s Test and Learn programme, Artlift is co-producing and refining an arts on prescription offer for adults leaving Intensive Care Units in Gloucestershire. Our Creative Health courses for ICU leavers are designed for adults who have spent time in ICU in Gloucestershire, this may be as a result of covid 19, diabetes, stroke, or any other conditions that require an ICU stay. Taking part in these tailored creative health courses can:

  • Reduce the challenging psychological impact staying in ICU has on individuals.
  • Increase mental wellbeing for participants
  • Increase social connection with people of similar lived experience

Who’s it for?

Individuals referred must be:

  • Over 18 and recovering from a stay in ICU in Gloucestershire
  • Comfortable in a group setting
  • Willing / able to use Zoom if being referred for an online course (we can support with Zoom familiarisation!)
  • Registered with a GP in Gloucestershire.

What participants experience

Participants are supported over a 10-week term to:

    • learn to tell stories through creativity, this may be their own stories, traditional stories or fantastical adventures exploring their wildest dreams!
    • develop creativity and build social connection through a variety of artistic genres / activities and to share their artwork (We plan to offer both online courses and face-to-face, community based courses)
    • if they wish, define light-touch goals through a personalised creative health plan, which focusses on what they can do, rather than any real or perceived limitations
    • devise Move On plans, including the setup of participant-led groups where appropriate, to enable participants to continue using creativity as a tool in their ongoing wellbeing post-Artlift

Intensive Care Unit Leavers courses are running:

  • Tuesdays, 1-3pm starting 27th September through to 6th December (excluding 1st October). Online via Zoom.

  • January and March (face to face course) dates to be confirmed

Courses, will draw upon gentle storytelling techniques including a range of arts activities from painting and drawing, to creative writing, printmaking and photography.   Click here to see our current courses or contact us for more information
